Scottish KartingWest of Scotland Kart ClubOver 70 drivers across 5 classes battled it out for honours of the Scottish kart champion. Across the weekend of October 17-18 West of Scotland Kart Club played host to the ASKC Scottish Kart Championships.
Strong turnouts across all classes made for competitive and close racing throughout the weekend. Competitors on Sunday morning were greeted with some challenging damp conditions to contend with.

Over the two days Bambinos competed in 5 time trials of 10 minutes each, it was Blair Smith who showed the most consistency over the 2 days taking 3 time trial wins and 2 second places over the 5 Time Trial runs giving him the top spot and crowned this years S Plate Bambino Champion. The conditions were dry Saturday and Damp on Sunday meaning it really tested the young 6 to 8 year old drivers abilities in the changeable Scottish weather.

With an extremely strong grid of Honda Cadets, this year seen the Honda Cadet lap record be set with 2 drivers from the Synergy factory team doing identical lap times, however the award went to Zac Drummond who crossed the line 1st to set the time on Heat 1 of the weekend with a time of: 58.11
On the qualifying session, Leon Hastie the previous lap record holder slotted it home in Pole for Heat 1 closely followed by Aston Sharp who set the exact same laptime but a lap later, the reigning S plate holder going into the weekend looking strong, on P3 was the current British Championship leader only 2 hundredths off the front 2 men with his Synergy team mate Jenson Graham only 2 hundredths further back. The top 12 drivers were all within 1 second of each other. Heat 1 saw Leon Hastie miss the closing time of the gate meaning Aston Sharp took the pole slot into Heat 1, It was Zac Drummond from Jenson Graham who crossed the line a tenth adrift with current Kartmasters GP plate holder Connor Duncan rounding of P3.
Heat 2 saw Zac Drummond take the chequered first, followed by Connor Duncan and SFR team mate Alexander Hawcutt in 3rd, an impressive drive from the back of the frield following a technical infringement in Qualifying saw Gregor Reid take 4th. Heat 3 seen an SFR 1,2,3 with Duncan from Hastie with Hawcutt in hot pursuit setting the fastest lap. The final saw an excellent battle with Jenson Graham, Zac Drummond and Connor Duncan 4 seconds up the road.
An 18minute final for the cadets really tested their consistency and resolve to not make a mistake and it was almost 3 abreast coming out the banked corner at the top of the infield, as the trio headed into the final corner at the pit entry Drummond and Duncan defended leaving the door open for an excellent inside double pass by Jenson Graham taking his first major title of the year and becoming this years Scottish Champion, Zac Drummond followed in 2nd with Connor Duncan in 3rd, an excellent race.

A dry Saturday qualifying seen Rhys Baillie take Pole by over 2 tenths of a second from Jay Kennedy and Lennon Allardyce.
Heat 1 saw the same trio finish in 1,2,3 respectively in the dry but cold conditions. The damp conditions of Sunday morning suited the driving style of Finlay Brown who drove away out front to an 11 second gap to Jay Kennedy, followed by Max Taylor.
Heat 3 Jay Kennedy took the win as a dry line was starting to appear from Finlay Brown and Alexander Cull. It was all down to the 18minute final, with the changing conditions it was anyones to win and the call of dry tyres was the right one with Rhys Baillie coming through in the drying track to take the win by 12 seconds in the 18minute final!, Alexander Cull took 2nd with Jay Kennedy who had been one of the most consistent the entire weekend taking P3, Thanks to Potenza Racing Engines who also gave the winner £150.00 in vouchers.

Junior Max had one of the strongest line ups in recent times, with weekend favourite Leon Henderson struggling to find the 1 lap pace in Qualifying it was Connor Leishman from Saltire Motorsport who took the pole from Les Taylor and lap record holder Jayson Mccleary in p3.
Heat 1 saw Leon Henderson and his consistency triumph crossing the line 1.26 seconds ahead of Les Taylor from Jayson Mccleary.
Heat 2 in the wet saw John Knox take the win from Leon Henderson and Jayson Mccleary, the trio all running from the Canon Motorsport tent were certainly pushing each other on in this one with the rest of the pack 8 seconds behind.
Heat 3 started to show a dry line with John Knox taking the win 8 seconds ahead of Chloe Grant and Leon Henderson in 3rd.
The final of 18minutes began with some excellent passing and racing, Leon Henderson with his consistency on the dry line came out on top 1.7seconds ahead of team mates for the weekend John Knox and Jayson Mccleary of Canon Motorsport, a 1,2,3 for the Canon Team. Potenza also awarded the winner in this race £150.00 – John Knox received the best junior driver of the weekend award for his performances across the 2 days.

This was going to be a tough grid, with Ben Donkin, Jack Gordon, Mark Ross the favourite trio going into the weekend to walk away with the S plate it was going to be a tough field to come out on top of, Ben Donkin slotted it home in Pole 2 hundredths from Jack Gordon and LMM team mate Mark Ross p3.
Heat 1 in the dry saw Jack Gordon take the flag first ahead of Canon team mate Luke Scharf and Ben Donkin. Heat 2 in the dampness of Sunday morning saw Jack Gordon take P1 again ahead of Luke Scharf and Paul Stewart. Heat 3 saw the dry line around the track come back Jack Gordon took the flag again ahead of Mark Ross and Ben Donkin in P3.
The final loomed – an 18 minute endurance almost to the line saw Jack Gordon faultless outfront, he crossed the line 1st to retain his S Plate title from the LMM duo of Ben Donkin in 2nd and Mark Ross in 3rd
Jack Gordon took the Senior Driver of the weekend award.
Well done to all the competitors who took part over the weekend event. Superb quality of racing throughout the classes!
